91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ Tech Hosts ACE Mentor Students at Stanton Campus
January 28, 2025
91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ Technical Community College hosted over 60 students from Hodgson Vo-Tech High School, Delcastle Technical High School, and St. Georges Technical High School at its Stanton Campus on December 11, 2024, as part of the ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering) Mentor Program.
The event was led by 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ Tech faculty and staff from the architecture, construction, civil and environmental engineering (ACCEE), mechanical engineering, and electronics engineering 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ. With the assistance of seven ACE Mentors, students attending the event were able to participate in several interactive activities.
“These activities were designed to provide hands-on learning experiences that would ignite curiosity and offer a deeper understanding of the various engineering fields,” said Stanton Campus Department Chair Heidi Gurdo. “They would highlight the breadth of 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ Tech’s engineering disciplines and the career-focused skills students can gain through our 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ.”
The first activity came from the mechanical engineering program. Students were able to tour the machine shop and lab, where they were taught about different tools used in the profession. The environmental engineering activity demonstrated the functions of the water table and allowed students to engage with the dynamics of water flow, erosion, and flood management.
The civil engineering station featured an augmented reality sandbox that allowed students to manipulate sand and observe how terrain changes affect water flow. The activity for architecture required students to work as a team to build a self-sustaining bridge. Lastly, electronics held a presentation that provided students with a practical understanding of electronics and their role in engineering applications.
“This inspiring day highlighted the strength of our engineering 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ and the potential of the next generation of innovators,” said Gurdo. “A big thank you to the ACE Mentors, school staff, and students for making this event such a success.”
ACE Mentor 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ works with students across New Castle County to learn about architecture, construction, and engineering careers. This is done in many ways, such as through professional career spotlights, field trips, and the Season Project. The program also aims to grow students' skills in professional development, communication, and networking.
