Leaders from 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ Technical Community College and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ (Highmark 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ) joined with state officials and members of the College’s Board of Trustees to cut the ribbon on the new Highmark Healthcare Center of Excellence at the Charles L. Terry Jr. Campus in Dover.

The $3.4 million renovation of the 8,700-square-foot facility began in August 2020, and final touches to the façade of the 49-year-old building were completed this year. The project cost includes $1 million from Highmark 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ’s BluePrints for the Community grant program, which helped fund a number of projects and initiatives, such as laboratory equipment upgrades, technology enhancements, a scholarship for allied health 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ, establishment of a student support fund, and beautification of the building's exterior.

“The state-of-the-art classrooms and labs in this new center will be used to train students for allied health careers to meet some of the highest demand labor market needs in 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ,” 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ Tech President Mark T. Brainard said at the Sept. 3 ribbon-cutting event. “We are grateful to Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ for this generous donation and continued support of the College and our mission.”

The Highmark Healthcare Center of Excellence is housed in a building on the Terry Campus that is highly visible from U.S. 13, and which now displays the Highmark name, along with digital signage that promotes the center, as well as other College 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ and events.

“Collaboration between Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ and Del Tech spans many years and a variety of ways as we have collectively taken action to address workforce needs within the constantly changing health industry,” said Nick Moriello, president of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ. “We are excited for the next phase of this exciting investment with the College, which is part of Highmark’s longstanding commitment to the healthcare workforce in 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ, totaling more than $10 million since 2007.”

The Highmark Healthcare Center of Excellence will include training for short-term certification 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ in allied health, including:

  • Certified Central Service Technician Training (Sterile Processing)
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant
  • Certified EKG Technician
  • Certified Hemodialysis Technician
  • Certified Medical Administrative Assistant
  • Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate Program
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician
  • Dental Assistant
  • Emergency Medical Technician - Basic Certification Course
  • Patient Care Assistant

Students who earn these certifications can help to address the needs of their fellow 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛans, especially as the state’s population ages and chronic health conditions become more prevalent.

Bridget Latta, a graduate of the certified clinical medical assistant with phlebotomy program, described her 91ÊÓƵÎÛÎÛ Tech experience for the attendees at the ribbon-cutting event, saying she learned everything she needed to know to prepare for her current job at ChristianaCare Cardiology. She also said the time she spent away from her son taking classes will now help her better provide for him and her family.

“I am very proud to be a Del Tech graduate,” she said.  “My life has completely changed. I have Del Tech to thank for training me for a second career and support during the application process. I enjoy being a medical assistant and intend to have a long career.”
